Meet Sylvie Coulange | Cookbook Author
We had the good fortune of connecting with Sylvie Coulange and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sylvie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
“Fait Maison” came to life in 2016, as a small catering company with one purpose: to make simply good tasting, healthy, and visually beautiful food available to the ones around me. I began with good-for-you-food and while it was all about good food in the first place, I quickly realized that there was so much more I could give and share that goes way beyond food.
It’s an idea mostly, but put into action it can change the way people think, act and treat each other. A lifestyle of healthy living and giving. I continuously want to share, inspire and lift people up.
Cooking can be really intimidating at first, and I didn’t want anyone to struggle to cook a healthy meal. So I began creating recipes with the goal to show how simple cooking truly is; how meaningful, therapeutic and how truly gratifying it is to cook for our family and those around us.
Besides cooking, I also share various life lessons and things I love and learned along the way. What I share in my books and everything I do is a reflection of my company’s attributes and philosophies, something within myself that I live for personally.
It is an understanding and acceptance of our whole self and those around us. It is a lifestyle that we can all choose to create.
Cooking was a very loving, natural first step into this journey which is why we began with writing down what I cook for my own family, journalling cookbooks. Food for the Soul (shine vol. 1) and A Wise Medicine (shine vol. 2) have such deep meanings. Everything I do, write, create and curate is based on shared intimate personal experiences.
But there is more to it that goes beyond food.
My purpose is to share with everyone what I learn along the way, as we will shine and inspire one another.
My company is naturally growing into product development – Shine is the product line carefully created and curated under the house of Fait Maison made personally for our audience. My intention behind the marketplace was to make people’s lives easier, whole, and accessible. I’ve decided to create and curate my own hand-crafted products, and I take pride in working, collaborating with like-minded people.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Much of what I share in my books is based on my own personal observations about living better and things I’ve learned in making both mistakes and successes. As a self-taught cook who began with no prior knowledge or formal training, my motivation was to create simple, healthy, and delicious meals to better nourish my family. My pure motivation is Love and care.
My cookbooks go beyond food as it is a way for me to touch a broader audience and share a story.
It all started with food and sharing food but cooking also inspires creativity, enhances mindfulness, and stirs up happiness. It’s table therapeutics and floured meditation – It’s a measured lifestyle.
It is not just about eating clean. It is about what we put into our lives – there is a vital emotional component and connection to food. It is our mindfulness, our bodies, our souls, and our hearts.
To me, shining comes from within and is wrapped around three gifted fundamentals, our mind, our body, our soul:
We will shine, feel happy, and full when we change the way we see food, cook with it, serve it and allow it to be a vital part of our lifestyle.
Cooking helps create bonds and relationships, which boosts happiness. Cooking for others is nurturing, and sharing meals strengthens those relationships as we show genuine care. It is an act of love. It is all about our intentions and ourselves, our light. Practicing gratitude, smiling more, loving more, showing compassion to others every day leads to greater happiness. When our mind, body, and soul are truly aligned, we shine from within, and it cannot help but to automatically travel outward to others.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
El Pescador fish market in La Jolla is my favorite restaurant – fresh and clean food served in the most simple form. Al Fresco in Oceanside is another one of my favorite. My friend Genny puts together the cutest cheese and charcuterie and her story is beautiful. I love to spend time at the beach, Windansea in La Jolla, in the neighborhood Iv’e lived for the past 16 years, meet up with my girlfriends, surf and share laughs.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It isn’t always easy to follow your guts, believe in yourself and just do it. I would never have started this beautiful journey without the help, support, care and Love of my very close friends and family members.
